1. QUOTE OF THE MONTH

"Legislation may not change the heart, but it will restrain the heartless." --Martin Luther King, Jr.

2. WHAT'S NEW AT WORLD BEYOND BORDERS

This month at World Beyond Borders we have two new articles. They are listed below by section.

How We Might Get There?

*Tad Daley explains why the Bush administration's unilateral preemptive policies do not deter Iran from building nuclear weapons but actually encourage them. Furthermore, assembling a nuclear arsenal is the only thing Iranians believe will successfully defend them from American aggression. www.worldbeyondborders.org/iranwmds.htm

Eliminating War

*In this essay on violence and nonviolence, Eli Williamson-Jones explores how these two differing methods work in shaping a just revolution and how they both may play a part in someday helping to establish a world federal government. www.worldbeyondborders.org/violencenonviolence.htm

3. Could A Rapid Deployment Force Save Sudan?
by Eli Williamson-Jones

With the chaos continuing to escalate in Iraq, our news headlines have been primarily focused on the Middle East. Few realize that there is more tragedy unfolding in Sudan, Africa right now that makes the daily losses happening in Iraq seem less significant. The 21 year civil war in this poor African nation has recently intensified in the northern and southern regions. The genocide there is threatening to break out to a level not seen since the 1994 Rwanda massacre.

UN officials have estimated that 20,000 Sudanese have already been butchered by a militia sent by the Islamic fundamentalists in control of Khartoum. 1.2 million of the 6.7 million people near and around Darfur are refugees fleeing their homes that have been either burned or seized. 350,000 of these refugees may die of starvation, disease or ethnic cleansing in the next month unless someone from outside the country intervenes. The United States has pledged over one hundred and fifty million dollars in aid for the refugees, but will this be enough?

If the world community continues to act months after such crises erupt, it will be more costly and difficult to stop the carnage and human suffering. A promising proposal was made in the UN to address this pressing issue in the world which involved the creation of a Rapid Deployment Force. Citizens from every nation would serve in this military force. They would be used in the world's hot spots where such conditions for genocide could be stopped before they spiraled out of control. Soldiers serving with the UNRDF would do so not for the common good of any one country but for the common good of all humanity. If the situation in Sudan deteriorates further, more nations may take the UNRDF proposal seriously.
